When Mom went to her "ladies meeting" at church or club with her neighborhood friends, Dad sat me down with needle and thread to entertain myself while he did his farm work (I'm probably 7 at the time, and my, what a knotted mess my stitchery was). In later years, every Thanksgiving my cousin brought a craft for the family members to try. This one particular Thanksgiving, she brought one of those .50¢ Christmas ornament cross stitch kits and I was HOOKED! (But, I must confess it turned out to be a UFO.)
